Memorial of Saint John Vianney, Priest

“People come into your life for a reason, A season or a Lifetime.” The opening line of a poem by Brian A. “Drew” Chalker speaks of a reality most of us have experienced. Whether it is sharing a classroom, a parish, or a neighborhood, friendships come in varying degrees of persistence. Yet, there is a kind of friendship that transcends these categories. Spiritual friendships look beyond the temporal things that bond us and look to the eternal realities that bind us.

“Do you know that there is a great person in France in our days? A poor country parish priest who works miracles, the parish priest of Ars” I dare not say that he is my friend, he is too holy for that!” – Saint Peter Julian Eymard (PO 20,27)

Saint John Vianney and Saint Peter Julian Eymard, a friendship that began on earth and surely continues in heaven. Two holy priests called on different paths, yet animated by the same Spirit, they shared a passion for the Eucharist and a great love for Mary.

A few months before Saint John Vianney died, Peter Julian visited him in Ars. According to Father Tesnière, Peter Julian was feeling discouraged at the difficulties facing the Congregation and asked his holy friend for prayers, to which he responded: “My friend, my good friend, you want me to pray the good Master for you? But you have him, you, you have him always before you!”

This is what holy friendships do for us; they remind us of the truth God has already written in our hearts. They remind us of our identity as beloved children of the Father and of the gift of the Eucharist present in our lives. They echo the most crucial question, “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15)

Let us pray:

Almighty and merciful God, who made the Priest Saint John Vianney wonderful in his pastoral zeal, grant, we pray, that through his intercession and example, we may in charity win brothers and sisters for Christ and attain with them eternal glory. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, forever and ever. (Collect)
