Liturgical Feast of Saint Peter Julian Eymard
Founder of the Aggregation and the Congregations of the Blessed Sacrament
Today the family of Saint Peter Julian Eymard rejoices with the universal Church in keeping the memorial of our Founder, Saint Peter Julian Eymard, whom Saint John Paul II called “an outstanding apostle of the Eucharist.” The title of Apostle well describes Eymard’s zeal and love for the Church and for the sacrament of the Eucharist, which he saw as “a powerful force of renewal for Church and society” (Rule of Life, 33).
It is also a recognition of the example Saint Eymard left to the Church and his Eucharistic family. He asked that we, too, give that example by our lives of Eucharistic love – “Each one will thus make the love of Jesus Christ in the divine Eucharist, the centerpiece of their virtues if they wish to become a true disciple and a worthy apostle of the love of Jesus Christ.”
As we celebrate his feast day and his Eucharistic charism, we carry with us his prophetic message that Christ in his Eucharist can answer the deepest needs of a world hungry for meaning, a message that needs to be heard more than ever before.
As the Bishops of the United States call for a three-year period of Eucharistic revival throughout all of the USA dioceses, the family of Eymard can see this moment as an opportunity to share the Eucharistic vision of our founder. When Bishop Andrew Cozzens, in the context of the call for a Eucharistic revival, said, “We want to start a fire, not a program,” we are reminded of Eymard’s words, “shouldn’t we have both contemplatives and apostles, adorers and firebrands, since our Lord wants this Eucharistic fire to set the world ablaze.”
As the family of Eymard, this is our summons.
Saint Peter Julian Eymard, pray for us.
